A Quick Guide to Popular Beer Styles

Beer comes in many flavors, colors, and strengths—each style offering a unique taste experience. Whether you’re new to craft beer or looking to try something different, here’s a quick overview of the most common beer styles:

🍺 Lager

Crisp, clean, and refreshing. Lagers are fermented at cooler temperatures, giving them a smooth finish. Common types include:

Pale Lager: Light-bodied, mild bitterness (e.g., Budweiser, Pilsner Urquell)

Dark Lager: Toasty and malty with subtle sweetness (e.g., Dunkel, Schwarzbier)

🍻 Pilsner

A type of lager with a stronger hop presence and a more bitter, floral flavor. Originated in the Czech Republic. Great for fans of light beer with a bite.

🌾 Wheat Beer

Brewed with a high percentage of wheat, these beers are smooth, slightly cloudy, and often fruity.

Hefeweizen (Germany): Banana and clove notes

Belgian Witbier: Spiced with coriander and orange peel

🌕 Pale Ale

Balanced between malt and hops. A great entry point to hoppier beers.

American Pale Ale (APA): More citrusy and hop-forward than English versions

🌲 India Pale Ale (IPA)

Bold, hoppy, and often higher in alcohol. IPAs can be:

West Coast IPA: Clear, bitter, piney

New England IPA: Hazy, juicy, low bitterness

Double IPA: Stronger and hoppier

⚫ Stout

Dark, roasted, and rich—stouts offer flavors of coffee, chocolate, and sometimes oatmeal or lactose for creaminess.

Dry Stout: Like Guinness—smooth and bitter

Milk Stout: Sweeter with added lactose

🍞 Porter

Similar to stout but generally lighter and more chocolate-forward. Great for fans of dark, malty beers without heavy bitterness.

🍬 Sour Ale

Tart and often fruity. Sours range from mildly tangy to mouth-puckering.

Berliner Weisse & Gose: Light, low ABV, and citrusy

Fruited Sours: Often brewed with real fruit for a sweet-tart balance

🍯 Amber & Red Ales

Malty and balanced with a reddish hue. These beers feature caramel-like sweetness and light hop bitterness.

🥃 Barleywine

High in alcohol, intensely malty, and rich. Barleywines are bold, sipping beers with flavors of dried fruit, toffee, and warmth.

Final Sip

From crisp lagers to bold IPAs and rich stouts, there's a beer style for every taste. Explore a few and you might just discover your new favorite pint! 🍻
